COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to incorporate computer application
skills in the generation of office documents.
Emphasis is placed on the production of letters, manuscripts, business
forms, tabulation, legal documents and newsletters. Upon completion, students should be able to
make independent decisions regarding planning, style, and method of
presentation.

At the end of this course, the
student will be able to successfully complete the following skills:
A. Keyboarding
¨ To key a minimum of 45
wpm for five minutes with no more than three errors on straight copy.
B. Language Art
¨
To
refine proofreading skills and correctly use proofreaders' marks.

To
correctly capitalize, punctuate, and spell.
¨
To
recognize subject/verb and pronoun agreement and refine composing skills.
C. Word Processing
¨
To
use the word processing commands (MS Word) necessary to complete the document
processing activities.
D. Document Processing
¨
To
format reports, multi page letters and memos, formal reports, international
business documents, medical and legal office documents.

To
design office forms office publications, and web pages.

Note: Pop Tests and Quizzes will be averaged into the
appropriate category. You are expected to keep up with the assignments and turn
them in on time. Late work is worth 0 POINTS. No make-ups will be given. Sometimes
situations arise and these will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Do not wait
until after the fact, let the instructor know ASAP.

COURSE
MANAGEMENT:
1.
Administrative
Withdrawal: Class attendance of
100 percent is expected. If absences
exceed 20 percent (16 hours or 3 consecutive weeks), the student will be
dropped from the class with a letter grade of F. IF you do not make contact by
responding in the Discussion Board by January 17, you will be withdrawn from
the course. If absent from class for two consecutive
weeks, the student will be dropped from the course with a grade of “W” or “WF”
depending on the official withdrawal date.
2. Student
Initiated Withdrawal: A student
may initiate withdrawal before
midterm with a grade of W. After midterm, the student will
receive a grade of WF unless there
is proof of an extenuating circumstance approved by the instructor and Vice‑President
of Student Services.
3. Students are required to complete all
assignments. A written excuse accepted
by the instructor is required for a make-up test. Each student is expected to do his/her
own work. Cheating will result in Dismissal and an F in the class.

The following points
will be used to determine timed-writing points.
The points below are based on 5‑minute timed writings. Two of your best five-minute timed writings
must be submitted by deadline date set.
NOTE:
The student will receive speed points and accuracy points on each timed
writing. The two points will be
averaged together to receive final timed-writing points

Usage Policy for Computer
Classroom Labs
Access
·
Computer
labs will only be accessible when an instructor or lab facilitator has been
assigned to supervise the lab. At all
other times the labs will be locked.
·
Only
students currently enrolled in a computer course may use the instructional
computer labs to work on current projects assigned in an appropriate class.
·
Any
student wishing to use one of the computer labs outside of the normally
scheduled class time period needs to have permission from an instructor.
Printing
·
No
printing is permitted without the specific consent of an instructor.
Common
Courtesy
·
Students
should clean up the work area around them and return chairs to proper positions
when they leave the lab.
·
Conversations
during lab hours should be kept to a minimum to assure a quiet working
environment for all students using the facility.
·
No
food or drinks are allowed in the computer labs.
Equipment
·
Students
should inform the instructor of any software or hardware problems. In no instance should a student attempt to
repair or reset computers or printers, remove paper jams, or install software
of any kind without the permission of the instructor.
·
Students
should not leave saved files on any hard drive when they leave the lab. Student files should be transferred to either
a floppy disk or a CD.
