PREREQUISITE:  OST 080 or Keyboard Proficiency

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course introduces word processing concepts and applications. Topics include preparation of documents and mastery of specialized software functions. Upon completion, students should be able to work effectively in a computerized word processing environment.

SOFTWARE:              Word 2003; Windows 2000

                                   

COURSE COMPETENCIES:

 

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

 

1.      Create, edit, save, and print Word documents.

2.      Format characters with the use of fonts and symbols and use the Help feature.

3.      Format paragraphs through indentions, alignment, bullets, and line spacing.

4.      Format documents and sections with the use of margins, breaks, and orientation.

5.      Enhance documents with writing tools such as Spelling, Thesaurus, and Grammar.

6.      Maintain and print documents, manipulate tabs and text, format multi-page documents, and format with styles and outlining.

7.      Format with special features, create and format tables, and create charts and diagrams.

8.      Add visual appeal to documents and share documents.

COURSE EVALUATION:

 

Final Grades will be calculated as follows:

            Average of all chapter assignments                                                 40%

            Average of all unit performance assessments                                  40%

            Average of unit theory tests                                                            20%

 

Note: Pop Tests and Quizzes will be averaged into the appropriate category. You are expected to keep up with the assignments and turn them in on time. Late work is worth 0 POINTS.  No make-ups will be given.

 

GRADE SCALE:

                          90-100    =   A

                            80-89    =    B

                            70-79    =    C

                            60-69    =   D

                      Below 60    =    F

 

COURSE MANAGEMENT

 

1.      Administrative Withdrawal:  Class attendance of 100 percent is expected. If absences exceed 20 percent (10 hours or 3 consecutive weeks), the student will be dropped from the course with a grade of F. IF you do not make contact by responding in the Discussion Board by August 25, you will be withdrawn from the course.

2.      Student Initiated Withdrawal:  A student may initiate withdrawal before midterm with a grade of W. After midterm, the student will receive a grade of WF unless there is proof of an extenuating circumstance.

3.      Students are required to complete all assignments. Each student is expected to do his/her own work. Cheating will result in Dismissal and an F in the class.

Usage Policy for Computer Classroom Labs

 

Access

 

·        Computer labs will only be accessible when an instructor or lab facilitator has been assigned to supervise the lab.  At all other times the labs will be locked.

 

·        Only students currently enrolled in a computer course may use the instructional computer labs to work on current projects assigned in an appropriate class.

 

·        Any student wishing to use one of the computer labs outside of the normally scheduled class time period needs to have permission from an instructor.

 

Printing

 

·        No printing is permitted without the specific consent of an instructor.

 

Common Courtesy

 

·        Students should clean up the work area around them and return chairs to proper positions when they leave the lab. 

 

·        Conversations during lab hours should be kept to a minimum to assure a quiet working environment for all students using the facility.

 

·        No food or drinks are allowed in the computer labs. 

 

Equipment

 

·        Students should inform the instructor of any software or hardware problems.  In no instance should a student attempt to repair or reset computers or printers, remove paper jams, or install software of any kind without the permission of the instructor.

 

·        Students should not leave saved files on any hard drive when they leave the lab.  Student files should be transferred to either a floppy disk or a CD.
