COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
This course provides entry-level skills in using software with desktop publishing capabilities. Topics include principles of page layout, desktop publishing terminology and applications, and legal and ethical considerations of software use. Upon completion, students should be able to design and produce professional business documents and publications.

COURSE COMPETENCIES:
The student will be able to:
1. Identify the design concepts of focus, balance, proportion, contrast, directional flow, consistency, and color.
2.
Evaluate
documents for the use of basic design concepts.
3.
Integrate
basic layout and design concepts, using desktop publishing features of
Microsoft Word 2003, to enhance the readability of multiple-page, portrait or
landscape documents such as letterheads, merged postcards, business cards,
personal documents, certificates, labels, name tags, flyers, brochures,
promotional documents, business forms, online forms, presentational materials,
and newsletters.
4.
Produce and enhance
business and personal documents with variable page layouts using standardized
type and graphic design techniques while incorporating Word 2003 features such
as watermarks, varying letter and word spacing, styles, drawing canvas,
AutoFormat, and Smart Tags along with Microsoft Template Gallery and Word
document templates.
5.
Manage Word
2003 document files and folders using a Windows operating system.
6.
Publish Word
documents in a variety of formats, including PowerPoint presentations and Web
pages.
7.
Become
familiar with the basic features and capabilities of Microsoft Publisher 2002
to produce professional-looking flyers, brochures, and newsletters.

Note: Pop Tests and Quizzes will be averaged into the
appropriate category. You are expected to keep up with the assignments and turn
them in on time. Late work is worth 0 POINTS. No make-ups will be given. Situations
my arise and these will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Do not wait until
after the fact, let the instructor know ASAP. You will lose 1 point from
participation from each mandatory day you miss.

COURSE MANAGEMENT
1.
Administrative Withdrawal: Class attendance of
100 percent is expected. If absences
exceed 20 percent (13 hours or 3 consecutive weeks), the student will be
dropped from the course with a grade of F.
2.
Student Initiated Withdrawal: A student may initiate
withdrawal before midterm with
a grade of W. After midterm the student will receive a grade of WF unless there is proof of an
extenuating circumstance.
3. Students are required to complete all assignments.

Procedure
Work all of the exercises within each chapter. The chapter
explains how to do the work as well as introduces new concepts and skills. Most
assignments will be turned in via the internet website. Questions may be asked
either in class or via the discussion board. Class attendance/participation is
mandatory. Make sure you understand how to use the website and how to upload
your assignment. From time to time, assignments may be changed. They will be
posted on the internet. If I ask you to print them, make sure you save a copy
for your portfolio. Save your files until the semester has ended.

Usage
Policy for Computer Classroom Labs
Access
·
Computer labs will only be accessible when an
instructor or lab facilitator has been assigned to supervise the lab. At all other times the labs will be locked.
·
Only students currently enrolled in a computer course
may use the instructional computer labs to work on current projects assigned in
an appropriate class.
·
Any student wishing to use one of the computer labs
outside of the normally scheduled class time period needs to have permission
from an instructor.
Printing
·
No printing is permitted without the specific consent
of an instructor.
Common Courtesy
·
Students should clean up the work area around them
and return chairs to proper positions when they leave the lab.
·
Conversations during lab hours should be kept to a minimum
to assure a quiet working environment for all students using the facility.
·
No food or drinks are allowed in the computer
labs.
Equipment
·
Students should inform the instructor of any software
or hardware problems. In no instance
should a student attempt to repair or reset computers or printers, remove paper
jams, or install software of any kind without the permission of the instructor.
·
Students should not leave saved files on any hard
drive when they leave the lab. Student
files should be transferred to either a floppy disk or a CD.
