Course Description:  This course provides a survey of fundamental biological principles for non-science majors.  Emphasis is placed on basic chemistry, cell biology, metabolism, genetics, taxonomy, evolution, ecology, diversity, and other related topics.  Laboratory participation is an integral part of the course.

Text:  Biology:  Concepts and Applications, Starr, 6th Edition

Course Competencies:  Upon satisfactory completion Principles of Biology, students should be able to demonstrate increased knowledge and better understanding of biology as it applies to everyday life.  Students will build a knowledge base in the following areas of Biology:

            Chemical basis of life

Cell structure and function

Principles of inheritance

Evolution

Biodiversity

Plant structure and function

Animal structure and function

Ecology

Methods of Teaching:  Lecture/ discussions, performance based learning activities, classroom hands-on activities, demonstrations, laboratory investigations, videos, computer software/on-line activities, and student presentations will be used throughout the semester.

Grading Criteria:                                                                    Grading Scale:
