Course Description:  This course provides a survey of fundamental biological principles for non-science majors.  Emphasis is placed on basic chemistry, cell biology, metabolism, genetics, taxonomy, evolution, ecology, diversity, and other related topics.  These topics are covered via your textbook and videotapes.  Blackboard discussion and laboratory participation are integral parts of the course.  A laboratory kit composed of small-scale experiments for the independent study of biology is required for this course.

Required Materials:

Text:  Biology: Concepts and Applications, Starr, 6th Edition

Telecourse Student Guide:  Cycles of Life:  Exploring Biology

BIO 110 Video Programs:  Cycles of Life:  Exploring Biology

BIO 110 Laboratory Kit

Teleweb tapes and DVDs may be checked out from the BCC library.  A library card is required for checkout.  The tape/DVD checkout room is in Building 3, Room 106.  If you receive a defective tape or DVD, return it to the BCC library for a replacement.  Remember to return tapes/DVDs to the library at the end of the semester.  Failure to do so will result I fines and your inability to get grades or transcripts.

Course Competencies:  Upon satisfactory completion of Principles of Biology, Students should be able to demonstrate increased knowledge and better understanding of biology as it applies to everyday life.  Students will build a knowledge base in the following areas of Biology:

            Chemical basis of life

            Cell structure and function

            Principles of inheritance

            Evolution and biodiversity

            Plant structure and function

Animal structure and function

            Ecology

Methods of Learning:  Students will read required text materials, view videotapes, and complete study guide according to the schedule supplied by the instructor.  Students will post and respond to discussion board topics. One current event article summary is required.  Laboratory investigations will be performed by the student.  Lab reports and other writing assignments will be submitted to the instructor via learning unit assignments.  Students will log on to blackboard to take fie unit tests.

Grading Criteria:                                                                               Grading Scale:

Tests                                        60%                                                     A = 90-100

Lab Reports                             25%                                                     B = 80-89

Discussion Board                      10%                                                     C = 70-79
