BIO 111 Lab Kit

Course Competencies: Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of life at the molecular and cellular levels.  Students will have basic understanding of the following unifying themes of biology:

            Biological organization and emergent properties

            Cell structure and function

            Continuity of life based on heritable information in the form of DNA

            Structure and function are correlated at all levels of biological organization

            Organisms are open systems

            Regulatory mechanisms ensure a dynamic balance

            Diversity and unity are dual faces of life on earth

            Evolution

Methods of Learning: Students will read required text materials.  Online lecture notes will be available.  Blackboard discussion is a requirement.  Laboratory investigations will be performed by the student.  Lab reports will be submitted to the instructor via e-mail.  Students will log on to blackboard to take quizzes and tests.

Grading Criteria:                                           Grading Scale:

Tests   60%                                                      A = 90-100

Lab Reports/Quizzes   25%                              B = 80-89

Discussion Board     10%                                 C = 70-79

Current Event Article Summary   5%                 D = 60-69

                                                                        F = below 60

Attendance Policy:  Weekly participation is expected.  Twenty percent or two consecutive weeks with no contact will result in the student being dropped from the course.
