Course Description:  This course introduces the principles and concepts of biology.  Emphasis is placed on basic biological chemistry, cell structure and function, metabolism and energy transformation, genetics, evolution, classification, and other related topics.  Laboratory participation is an integral part of the course.

Text:  Biology, Campbell and Reece, 7th Edition

Course Competencies:  Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of life at the molecular and cellular levels.  Students will have basic understanding of the following unifying themes of biology:

            Biological organization and emergent properties

            Cell structure and function

Continuity of life based on heritable information in the form of DNA

Structure and function are correlated at all levels of biological organization

            Organisms are open systems

Regulatory mechanisms ensure a dynamic balance

Diversity and unity are dual faces of life on earth

            Evolution

Methods of Teaching:  Lecture/discussions, performance based learning activities, classroom hands-on activities, demonstrations, laboratory investigations, videos, computer software/on-line activities, and student presentations will be used throughout the semester.

Grading Criteria:                                                                   Grading Scale:

Tests                               60%                                                  A = 90-100

(4-5 regular, comprehensive final)                                             B = 80-89

Quizzes and Labs            25%                                     C = 70-79

Article Summaries (2)     10%                                       D = 60-69

PBL                                  5%                                                  F = below 60

Attendance Policy:  Attendance at all scheduled lecture and lab periods is expected.  Make up labs and tests shall only be permitted in cases where students have prior approval to be absent from the instructor or a true emergency existed causing a student’s absence (the determination will be at the instructor’s discretion). A student who misses 20% of class time or two consecutive weeks will be dropped from the course.  A student may be exempt from the final exam if the student has an A average and no more than one

absence.
