Course Description:  This course is the first of a two part comprehensive study of the anatomy and physiology of the human body.  Topics include body organization, homeostasis, cytology, histology, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems and special senses.

 

Text:  Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, Tortora and Grabowski, 11th Edition

 

Course Competencies:  Upon satisfactory completion of Anatomy and Physiology I, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the following principles of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships:

            Anatomical terminology

            Basic chemistry

            Body organization

            Cell structure and function

            Tissue structure and function

            Integumentary, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems

            Special senses

            Homeostasis

 

Methods of Teaching:  Lecture/discussion, performance based learning activities, classroom hands-on activities, demonstrations, laboratory investigations, videos, computer software/on-line activities, and student presentations.

Attendance Policy:  Attendance at all scheduled lecture and lab periods is expected.  Make up labs and tests shall only be permitted in cases where students have prior approval to be absent from the instructor or a true emergency existed causing a student’s absence (the determination will be at the instructor’s discretion). A student who misses 20% of class time or two consecutive weeks will be dropped from the course. A student may be exempt from the final exam if the student has an A average and no more than one absence.
