Course Description: This course covers principles of microbiology and the impact these organisms have on man and the environment. Topics include the various groups of microorganisms, their structure, physiology, genetics, microbial pathogenicity, infectious diseases, immunology, and selected practical applications.

Teleweb tapes and DVDs may be checked out from the BCC library. A library card is required for checkout. The tape/DVD checkout room is in Building 3, Room 106. If you receive a defective tape or DVD, return it to the BCC library for a replacement. Remember to return tapes/DVDs to the library at the end of the semester. Failure to do so will result in fines and your inability to get grades or transcripts. Microscopes may be checked out from the same place. All other required materials are available at the BCC bookstore.
Course Competencies: Upon satisfactory completion of Microbiology, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills including:
Microscopy
Aseptic technique
Staining
Culture Methods
Identification of Microorganisms
Methods of Learning: Students will read required text materials, view videotapes, and complete study guide according to the schedule supplied by the instructor. Students will post and respond to discussion board topics. One current event article summary is required. Laboratory investigations will be performed by the student. Lab reports and other writing assignments will be submitted to the instructor via learning unit assignments. Students will log on to blackboard to take unit tests.
Grading Criteria: Grading Scale:
Tests 60% A = 90-100
Lab Reports 25% B = 89-89
Discussion Board 10% C = 70-79
Current Event Summary 5% D = 60-69
F = below 60
Attendance Policy: Weekly participation is expected. Two consecutive weeks with no contact will result in the student being dropped from the course.
