                          (Cos. 112) MW 9:00-12:30, 1:00-3:00

Course Description: Cos. Courses 111,112 designed for the beginner student. Cos. 111 is a detailed theory course that addresses topics such as Orientation, Infection Control, Anatomy, Shampooing, Haircutting, Hairstyling, and Manicuring and Pedicuring. Cos. 111 designed to provide the student a foundation that will prepare them to provide basic salon services efficiently and safely. Cos. 112 designed for actual lab experience. Beginner students will work on mannequins before serving clients in the clinic. All students must have a passing grade in the theory aspect, complete 300 hours, and the North Carolina performance requirements before providing services in the cosmetology clinic.

Grading Procedure: The seven point system as it is described in the Bladen Community College catalog will be used to calculate your grade. Both lab assignments and class participation will be considered in the final grade. Each student will be responsible for all material covered during his or her absence, please call the instructor to receive this information. If a test is given while a student is absent, the test must be taken on the first day of their return. A doctor’s note is required for the student to be eligible to make up a test or to turn in assignments. A 10 point penalty will apply to your grade for assignments and / or test. Makeup exams will be at a higher degree of difficulty and will have a 10 point penalty attached. Medical excuses will be accepted and makeup test, exams or assignments can be taken as long as the student complies with the program attendance policy. (Must attend at least 80 % of course hours)

Attendance: Your attendance is expected for all scheduled classes. Absences must not exceed 20% of scheduled class time at any time during the course of the semester. Students whose absences exceed 20% of all scheduled contact hours will be dropped from the course due to the excessive absences.

 

Cell Phone Policy: Cellular telephones, beepers, two-way radios, and similar devices may cause distraction and /or disruption of the learning environment. All student’s must keep such devices turned off while in the cosmetology dept. Student’s with extenuating circumstances must seek permission from the instructor to have such devices in the cosmetology dept.

 

Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, demonstrations and guided lab work with evaluation of student’s skills by chapter tests, practical evaluations and a comprehensive final exam. Mid –term exams may also be scheduled.

 

Method of Evaluation: Cos. 111 (Theory) Daily grades will be averaged and count as 25% of your grade. Chapter test grades will be averaged together to count as 25% of your final grade. The mid-term exam will count as 25% of your final grade and the final exam will count as 25% of your final grade. A grade of “0” will be given for any assignment that is not turned in to the instructor. (Your lowest chapter test grade will be dropped before remaining test and assignments are averaged to determine your final grade.

The mid-term exam will count as 25% of your final grade and the final exam will also count as 25% of your final grade. A grade of “0” will be given for any assignment that is not turned in to the instructor. (Your lowest practical assignment grade will be dropped before remaining assignments are averaged.)A practical application requirement sheet must be completed before the week of final practical exams and will be counted as an assignment.
