COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides entry-level skills in using software with desktop publishing capabilities. Topics include principles of page layout, desktop publishing terminology and applications, and legal and ethical considerations of software use. Upon completion, students should be able to design and produce professional business documents and publications.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
n Evaluate design elements in a desktop published document for the appropriate use of focus, balance, proportion, contrast, directional flow, consistency, color and page layout.
n Produce internal business documents such as signs, fax cover sheets, agendas, memos and press releases with a variety of typefaces, type styles, type sizes and special symbols.
n
Produce
business letters, envelopes and business cards using a variety of templates,
fonts and rules lines.
n
Create
resumes, calendars, personal address labels and certificates.
n
Produce
promotional documents such as flyers and announcements using WordArt, frames,
text boxes, pictures, freeform, callouts and borders.
n
Create
brochures using a variety of page formats and design techniques.
n
Create
specialty promotional documents, such a gift certificates, postcards, name tags, business greeting cards, and invitations.
n
Create
on-screen presentations, paper printouts, handouts using PowerPoint.
n
Create
newsletters using templates and create your own designs based on desktop
publishing concepts.
n
Define,
create and incorporate additional design elements into newsletters, such as
headers/footers, table of contents, mastheads, sidebars, pull quotes, kickers,
signs, jump lines, captions, vertical lines and color.
n
Prepare
reports, term papers, manuals and forms containing elements such as a cover
page, table of contents, title page and index.
n Create all types of graphics that are encountered in the business world.
n Create web pages and fill-in forms on on-line with hyperlinks using Word 2000
n Build a portfolio of documents and design elements for student use when interviewing.
