TEXT:
- Introductory
Algebra,
Eighth Edition.
Lial, Hornsby, and McGinnis.
Pearson Education, 2006.
- 3-ring binder (at least 1”)
- Graph Paper
- Graphing/ Scientific Calculator
- Ruler
COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
This course continues the study of
algebraic concepts with emphasis on applications. Topics include factoring; rational
expressions; rational exponents; rational, radical, and quadratic equations;
systems of equations; inequalities; graphing; functions; variations; complex
numbers; and elements of geometry. Upon
completion, students should be able to apply the above concepts in problem
solving using appropriate technology.
UNITS
OF STUDY:
- Factoring
- Rational Expressions
- Systems of Equations and Inequalities
- Roots and Radicals
- Quadratic Equations
- Geometry
COURSE
COMPETENCIES:
At
the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- Factor Polynomials
- Solve rational,
radical, and polynomial equations and inequalities (numerically,
analytically, and graphically)
- Identify, evaluate,
and simplify rational expressions
- Identify and
demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of functions (verbally,
numerically, graphically, and symbolically)
- Solve systems of
equations (graphically, numerically, and analytically)
- Identify rational
exponents and evaluate expressions involving rational exponents
- Define and solve
direct, inverse, and joint variation
- Identify and perform
operations with complex numbers
- Demonstrate and apply
the topics of analytic geometry: distance formula, midpoint formula, slope
- Use geometric figures
to find perimeter, area, and volume
COURSE
MANAGEMENT:
- Four credit hours.
- Prerequisite: Math 070
or the appropriate test score
- Class attendance of
100% is expected. If absences
exceed 20%, (combined with classes held before the student entered the
class, if any) the student will
be dropped from the course.
- Students
who miss 2 consecutive weeks of class will be dropped from the course.
- Each student will
begin the semester with a 100 score for their attendance. For each day that is missed, regardless
of the reason, two points will be deducted from the score. The final total will be used when
calculating the final grade for the class.
- Tardiness/ Leaving
Early: “Students are expected to be
in their positions ready for instruction at the time scheduled for class
to begin. Any deviation from this
procedure is disruptive, discourteous, and unfair to instructors and to
fellow students who are deprived of the total instruction period as a
result. Accordingly, students who
are late for class…may at the discretion of the instructor, be denied
admittance to the class meeting, and be awarded an absence mark for the
class.” –BCC Catalog-p. 55
A student is considered tardy if he/she enters class
after work and/or instruction has begun.
Three tardies/leaving early equals one
absence.
- No late assignments will be accepted.
- No make-up test will be given without prior permission from the
instructor.
- For withdrawal
procedures and grades see your college catalog.
- Students with special
needs related to a diagnosed disability should contact Tommy Rains
(910.879.5570; trains@bladencc.edu)
in student services for assistance.
EVALUATION:
- Class Participation/Attendance 15%
- Homework/Quiz/Exercises 15%
- Chapter Test 50%
- Final 20%
