Course Description:

This course covers fundamental mathematical operations and their application to business problems. Topics include payroll, pricing, interest and discount, commission, taxes, and other pertinent uses of mathematics in the field of business.  Upon completion, students should be able to apply mathematical concepts to business.

 

Textbook:

Charles D. Miller, Stanley A. Salzman, Gary Clendenen, Business Mathematics, Ninth Edition, Addison-Wesley Educational Publishers, Inc., 2003.

Course Competencies:

At the end of this course, the student should be able to successfully complete the following skills:

A.                  Complete a bank deposit slip, bank check, check stub and check register.

B.                  Reconcile the bank statement with the checkbook.

C.                  Solve simple equations.

D.                 Solve percentage problems for the portion, base, and rate.

E.                  Calculate gross earning, net earning and payroll taxes.

F.                  Calculate cash and trade discounts.

G.                 Find the cost, markup, selling price, or percent of markup when the markup is based on cost or on selling price.

H.                  Compute variations of the simple interest formula.

I.                    Compute and analysis financial statements

Course Management:

A.                  Two class periods per week

B.                  Three (3) credit hours - Four (4) contact hours

C.                  Required course for Business Administration and Office Systems Technology

D.                 No make-up tests will be given without prior permission of instructor.

E.                  Class attendance of 100 percent is expected.  If absences exceed 20 percent,(combined with classes held before the student entered the class, if any) the student will be dropped from the course with a grade of F.

F.                  A student may initiate withdrawal before midterm with a grade of W.  After midterm, the student will receive a grade of F unless there is written proof of an extenuating circumstance.

Motivational Tips:

­        Perfect attendance with an A average or better on all other work are exempt from the FINAL EXAM.

­        Absences of 1-3 days the lowest test grade will be dropped.

 

NOTE:  EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN ON MONDAY FOR MONDAY/WEDNESDAY CLASS. EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN ON TUESDAY FOR TUESDAY/THURSDAY CLASS
