COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course is designed to develop elementary keyboarding skills.  Emphasis is placed on mastery of the keyboard.  Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate basic proficiency in keyboarding.

 

TEXT:                    Ober, et al., Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing for Windows, 9th Edition, Glencoe McGraw Hill, 2001.

                              Two 3.5" disks (HD) for data disk and Backup Disk

                             

SOFTWARE:          Microsoft Word 2002 or Office XP

                              Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing for Windows (GD9)

                              Distance Learning CD-ROM, 9th Edition

 

EQUIPMENT:         Computer and Printer

 

COURSE COMPETENCIES:

 

At the end of this course the student will be able to successfully complete the following skills:

 

A.                  Keyboarding

 

1.       To operate by touch the letter, number, and symbol keys.

2.       To demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques.

3.       To key a minimum of 28 words a minute on a 2-minute timed writing with no more than 3 errors.

 

B.                  Language Arts

 

1.       To develop proofreading skills.

2.       To correctly use capitals, commas, apostrophes, and numbers.

3.       To use correct spacing with punctuation.

 

C.                  Technical

 

1.       To answer correctly at least 70 percent of the questions on an objective test.

COURSE MANAGEMENT

 

1.       Administrative Withdrawal:  Class attendance of 100 percent is expected.  If absences exceed 20 percent, (10 hours or 3 consecutive weeks), the student will be dropped from the course with a grade of F.

 

2.       Student Initiated Withdrawal:  A student may initiate withdrawal before midterm with a grade of W. After midterm, the student will receive a grade of WF unless there is written proof of an extenuating circumstance approved by the instructor and Vice President of Student Services.

 

3.       Students are required to complete all assignments. A written excuse accepted by the instructor is required for a make-up test.

TIMED-WRITING GRADING STANDARDS

 

The following points scale will be used to determine timed-writing points.  These points below are based on 2-minute timed writings.  Five (5) of your best two-minute timed writings (taken during practice sessions) must be submitted on deadline date set by your instructor.

 

NOTE:  The student will receive speed points and accuracy points on each timed writing. These two points will be averaged together to receive timed-writing points for each timed writing.

Usage Policy for Computer Classroom Labs

 

Access

 

·                                Computer labs will only be accessible when an instructor or lab facilitator has been assigned to supervise the lab.  At all other times the labs will be locked.

 

·                                Only students currently enrolled in a computer course may use the instructional computer labs to work on current projects assigned in an appropriate class.

 

·                                Any student wishing to use one of the computer labs outside of the normally scheduled class time period needs to have permission from an instructor.

 

Printing

 

·                    No printing is permitted without the specific consent of an instructor.

 

Common Courtesy

 

·                    Students should clean up the work area around them and return chairs to proper positions when they leave the lab. 

 

·                    Conversations during lab hours should be kept to a minimum to assure a quiet working environment for all students using the facility.

 

·                    No food or drinks are allowed in the computer labs. 

 

Equipment

 

·                    Students should inform the instructor of any software or hardware problems.  In no instance should a student attempt to repair or reset computers or printers, remove paper jams, or install software of any kind without the permission of the instructor.

 

·                    Students should not leave saved files on any hard drive when they leave the lab.  Student files should be transferred to either a floppy disk or a CD.
