Course Description:

This course introduces the keypad and the touch method using the electronic calculator. Topics include mathematical functions in business applications. Upon completion, students should be able to use the electronic calculator to solve a wide variety of problems commonly encountered in business.

Textbook:

Calculators:  Printing & Display, by William R. Pasewark,  3rd Edition, Southwestern Publishing Co., 1999.

Calculator Simulation, by William R. Pasewark, 2nd Edition, Southwestern Publishing Company, 2000.

Unit of Study:

A.     Developing Ten-Key Touch Method Techniques

B.     Skill Development

C.     Application and Personal Calculation

Course Competencies:

Following completion of this course, the student will:

1.     Demonstrate proficiency in the touch system for the electronic display and printing calculator.

2.     Demonstrate a high level of production efficiency and skills through correct position and work habits.

3.     Demonstrate proficiency in accuracy, arriving at a correct answer while being timed, following direction and recording the answer.

4.     Process business documents and solve business math problems with machine assistance.

Course Management:

A.     Three (50) minute class periods per week.

B.     Two credit hours.

C.     Required course for Office Systems Technology.

D.     Prerequisite‑none.

E.     Class attendance of 100 percent is expected. Absences will demand a 10-point reduction per day in the student’s attendance grade. If absences exceed 20 percent, (combined with classes held before the student entered the class, if any) the student will be dropped from the course with a grade of F. 16 x 3 = 48 (48 x 20%) = 10 class hours = 10 absences.

Classroom Procedures and Assignments:

A.     Classroom lecture, discussion, and demonstrations.

B.     Six tests.

C.     Final Exam.

D.     Speed drills.

E.     Daily drills.

F.     No make-up test will be given without prior permission of instructor.

G.     Any daily work late will be discounted one letter grade.  Any daily work missed because of absences (a zero will be assigned, you get to drop three)

H.     A student who withdraw after Mid-Term, will receive a grade of F unless there is proof of an extenuating circumstance.
