Course Description: This course covers the fundamentals of chemistry which includes the following topics: measurements, matter, energy, atomic theory, bonding, molecular structure, nomenclature, balancing equations, stoichiometry, solutions, acids & bases, gases, basic organic chemistry.

Course Competencies: Upon satisfactory completion of Chem 090, students should be able to understand and apply basic chemical concepts necessary for success in college level science courses.

Course Management:

  • Attendance is expected at all lectures.

Students whose absences exceed 20% of all scheduled

contact hours will be dropped from the course by me for excessive absences. For our class, 20% is 6 days.

  • You will need an extra notebook for homework assignments. Each assignment should be clearly labeled and each problem numbered. I will be taking up these notebooks the day of the tests to look for completion and assigning grades appropriately. The only way you can not make a 100 on homework, is to simply not do the assignments and/or if I can not follow your work. I strongly advise you to attempt the homework when it is assigned.
  • No cell phones allowed. Do not get up out of class to answer a call. No text messaging.
  • A scientific calculator will be needed at all class meetings. Sharing of calculators during quizzes or tests will not be allowed.
  • Make up tests shall only be given when students have prior approval to be absent.  If you miss a test (with my approval), it must be made up before the next class period.
