Spanish 111 & 112. The
first two semesters of introductory Spanish for university students who have
little or no knowledge of the language “español”. These classes are approved to fulfill the general
education core requirements in humanities and fine arts. This
class will emphasize the five basic skills of language learning: reading,
writing, speaking, aural comprehension, and culture. At
the end of the course you should have a basic knowledge of these skills. This university level course will require constant study
and self-discipline on the student´s part for
successfully completion. Course
Requirements: You
will need your own text (no sharing of texts will be
allowed), a notebook, a book of spiral bound index cards, pencils, and
pens. *It is
imperative that you
study and complete all text assignments before coming to class. Please have the answers to each day´s
assignments written in a notebook and be prepared to answer all questions and
participate in class exercises. Everyone
is required to participate and will be
called upon frequently. Your class
participation (or lack of) will influence your final grade. The
workbook exercises are designed to further strengthen your skills and prepare you
for the lesson exams. Even though these exercises
are optional, I strongly recommend their completion.
You will earn extra credit if you elect to complete them and
turn them in no later than the allowed time. The
laboratory exercises (also found in the workbook) may also be
completed for extra credit. To complete them,
you will need to use the special set of audio CDs for the lab exercises that
are included with the purchase of a new text book. If
needed, you may purchase them separately from the B.C.C. bookstore or
from the Houghton-Mifflin Company. Tele.: The Hola Amigos web sight can be found at : http://college.hmco.com/languages/spanish/jarvis/hola/6e/students/index.html It contains
the ACE web-tests to help you to further strengthen your language
skills. I will accept the web tests as extra
credit if all of ACE, ACE Plus, and ACE video tests are
completed. All tests for a particular lesson must be handed in on time to get credit. Note: Any
assignments due, workbook exercises, lab exercises, and or web-sight
tests must be handed in on or before the day that you take the
corresponding lesson test. No late or partially done work will
be accepted and will be returned as “No credit”. Please
do workbook and laboratory exercises on the original pages that
are found in the workbook. No photo copies please. Attendance
Policy: It is to your
advantage to attend all classes. Attendance
will be checked daily and all absences will count, including excused. For
classes that meet three times a week (M., W.
& F.) you may not have more than eight absences. If this occurs, your grade will be lowered one
letter grade for each absence thereafter. You
will be dropped from the course if there are more
than 10 absences (excused or unexcused).
For classes that meet twice a week (Tues. and
Thurs.), the same will apply if you have more than six absences. (eight absences will be an automatic drop.) It will be the student´s
responsibility to keep track of his or her absences. *Students
who do not attend class for two consecutive weeks will automatically be
dropped. If you are
absent from class, please find out and do any missed assignments that will be
due before returning to class. Five
extra points
will be added to your final grade if have one or no absences. Repeated
tardiness will
lower your grade. (2 tardies = 1 absence). (Note: all days starting from the first
day of the semester are included as absences, even if you entered the
semester after the first day of class. If you leave
class early, it will also be counted as a tardy. You
must be in class for at least 40 min. (for M.W.F.) and at least 60
min. (for T.&Th.
classes) for them to count as being present. Grading
policy: The grading scale is as follows: 91-100=A, 81-90=B, 71-80=C, 61-70=D, and 60 or below=F. The average
for all lesson tests studied during the semester will make up 50%
of your final grade. The comprehensive final

into the participation grade. Extra credit is added on to the final grades. *Note: all
with drawls after midterm will result in final grade of WF. Please
