Acclaimed Poet Mark Cox to Visit BCC

Bladen Community College will welcome Professor Mark Cox to campus for a poetry reading and discussion on Mon., March 20, at 11 a.m. in the Student Resource Center.

Founder of the creative writing department at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Cox is acclaimed for his public readings, workshops, and panel discussions across the United States. He has a B.A. in English composition from DePauw University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Vermont College.

His poetry accolades include the 1999 Poetry Prize award from the Society of Midland Authors, the 1999 Oklahoma Book Award for Poetry, the 1996 Kansas Arts Commission Poetry Fellowship, and the 1994 OSU Burlington-Northern Faculty Achievement Award.

His poems explore essential connections between one’s relationship to poetic tradition, the reader, the natural world, other lives, and language itself. He is recognized for his attention to traditional poetry elements such as voice, rhythm, and image as he brings the reader decisively into the poem.

Cox will be reading from several of his 270 poems and essays. The presentation is open to the public.
