| THE NORTH CAROLINA NURSE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP LOAN PROGRAM |
| Scholarship/Loan funds are available
who are enrolled at least half-time in Practical Nursing program. Other
eligibility criteria are:
1. North Carolina residency; 2. Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Federal Student Aid Application Form; 3. Execution of a loan note with the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority to practice full-time as a Licensed Practical Nurse in North Carolina following completion of the program. The minimum scholarship/loan is $400 per academic year. The average award at Bladen Community College is $800 per academic year. However, the award is determined by the number of applicants and amount of available funding. Selection is based on academic merit and financial need. The scholarship/loan may be canceled for each six months of continuous full-time employment as a Licensed Practical Nurse in North Carolina. Cancellation rate if $250 per month as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Eligible employment means full-time continuous practice-whatever duty hours required by the employer as necessary to earn a salary and employee benefits equivalent to forty (40) hours per week. Verification of employment by the employer to the SEAA will be required before cancellation is applied. Recipients who do not cancel the scholarship/loan through approved service are required to repay the balance and interest no later than ninety (90) days followed the termination of enrollment or failure to commence or continue full-time employment as a nurse in North Carolina. If payment is not made within 90 days, interest at the rate of 10% per annum on the outstanding loan principal and all accrued in-school interest shall be capitalized and added to the principal. Interest during repayment shall be: (a) ten percent (10%) if all required course work is not successfully completed and primary domicile and employment are maintained in North Carolina; (b) ten percent (10%) if all required course work is successfully completed and primary domicile and employment are maintained in North Carolina but the recipient is not a full-time practicing nurse; (c) fifteen percent (15%) if primary domicile or employment is maintained outside the state of North Carolina. The interest rate established at the expiration of the ninety (90) day grace period will not change unless the recipient begins full-time employment as a nurse in North Carolina in an approved area of nursing practice. |
