BCC withdraws from participation in federal student loan program

Source Date: July 11, 2012

This fall, Bladen Community College will no longer participate in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. The action came after the North Carolina General Assembly voted to allow colleges in the state's Community College System to determine if participation in the program was in the best interest of the college's service areas.

This action will not affect other federal and state grant and loan programs, according to BCC Financial Aid Director Samantha Benson. The college's largest single source of assistance to students in the area is the federal Pell Grant program. Nearly 80 percent of BCC students qualify for assistance under the Pell Grant program.

"We also have an array of scholarship programs funded through the Bladen Community College Foundation and other avenues," said Benson. "Other grant and loan programs are also available."

Benson said that BCC's Financial Aid Department works very hard to ensure that every qualifying student has access to financial assistance to continue their educational journey.

Benson urges all students who plan to register for classes at BCC this fall to go online to fafsa.gov and fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid or come by the Financial Aid office at the college for assistance in submitting the application.
