BCC now offers machinist certificate program
Source Date: July 16, 2012
This fall Bladen Community College will begin offering a new technical certificate program geared toward preparing students for emerging opportunities as machinists. It will be available to both high school students enrolled at BCC through the Career and College Promise program and others interested in learning a new skill.
The new 18-credit hour machinist certificate will be offered through the Industrial Systems Technology program. Though the certificate can prepare individuals to find employment as machinists, the courses offered in the program can also be used to pursue an associate degree in Industrial Systems Technology at BCC.
The Machining certificate includes courses in blueprint reading, DC/AC electricity, hydraulics/pneumatics, two courses in machine processes, and introduction to maintenance procedures.
Workforce statistical surveys indicate that many of the machinists currently employed in area industries are nearing retirement age, which is projected to leave a shortage of trained workers to fill these critical positions. An extensive market also exists for machinists in the state, national and international labor forces.
Precision machinists use machine tools; such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders; to produce precision metal parts. Though they may produce large quantities of one part, they are often called upon to produce small batches or one-of-a-kind items. They use their knowledge of the working properties of metals and their skill with machine tools to plan and carry out the operations needed to make machined products that meet precise specifications.
According to BCC Dean of Engineering and College Transfer Edward Dent, the machining certificate will prepare students for jobs with good pay and excellent potential for career advancement.
