The official sources for emergency information include the BCC homepage, BCC email, and the BCC Facebook feed. Official statements and responses from the college will be communicated through these designated media outlets. Additional communication tools the college may utilize during an emergency include other social media channels as well as local media outlets. BCCAlert phone calls and/or text messages through Regroup will also be issued to employees and students for weather events, updates, or immediate threats to the campus community (e.g., a tornado warning, health crisis, an active attacker). Fall 2020 at Bladen Community College

In planning for the fall 2020 semester, Bladen Community College has two goals, health and safety on its campus and student success. We must protect the health of the campus community while giving students educational opportunities that lead to good jobs, economic mobility and personal fulfillment. Student centered, future focused is, as always, Bladen Community College’s commitment to the community it serves.  We want all our students to progress toward and achieve their academic and career goals. A safe and healthy campus community is always a top priority as well, and the COVID-19 pandemic requires us to take extra measures to ensure that everyone, employees and students alike, remain healthy.

With the virus still very prevalent in our community, we must face risks and realities in combating its spread. Students who get sick cannot continue coursework or progress toward completion. Faculty who get sick cannot teach; staff who get sick cannot provide important support services our students and faculty need.

We have a plan for addressing these priorities and meeting the challenges they present. The plan has been developed with the latest data and guidance from local public health officials, state community college leaders, and CDC recommendations. Our plan reflects a semester that will look very different from past fall semesters at Bladen Community College – but one that will enable us to maximize student progress while minimizing health risks and viral spread, within the college and throughout the community.

Bladen Community College’s Fall 2020 semester classes will begin, as originally scheduled, on August 17. Academic calendar dates throughout the semester, including exams, breaks and holidays, will not change. Final registration to be held August 12-13 with faculty and staff available in person to assist current and enrolling students.

Although our plan was developed using the most current information available to date, it is responsive and fluid.  Strategies, processes and protocols may be adjusted throughout the semester as new developments warrant and in alignment with the phases delineated within the Governor’s executive orders.

Course Options

This fall, degree and non-degree courses will be offered in a hybrid format (blend of in-person and online instruction) or fully online. The online designation signifies that 100% of the course material is delivered online. Students can access their lessons via a web browser. Some online classes may be completed at the students’ convenience, while others are synchronous, requiring students to meet virtually with their instructor and classmates at designated times throughout the semester. Hybrid courses take advantage of the best features of both in-person and online instruction. All students should carefully read course comments in Self-Service and check their Bladen Community College email for communications from their instructors prior to the start of the semester.

Many of our hands-on applied classes, such as welding, returned to our campuses over the summer in a hybrid format. For the fall semester, classes, labs and shops will meet with typically 1/3 to 1/2 normal student capacity to ensure social distancing. To provide increased opportunities, the college will offer second 8 week classes beginning October 15th, in addition to the traditional 16-week semester.  Registration for second 8 week classes opens September 1st.

With online instruction continuing to be much more predominant than in the past, it’s important to note that Bladen Community College continues to be ranked very highly as an online community college across the state and nation.  To strengthen our online preparedness, our full-time instructors will have the opportunity for further training before classes start and we have made significant investments to expand technology-based tools such as synchronous video. We will also be offering to eligible students to provide hardware and access support for online learning.

Health and Safety Protocols

Bladen Community Colleges Maintenance department has established cleaning processes and follow public health guidelines to keep our college community safe and healthy. These guidelines that address on-campus interaction include signage emphasizing social distancing, stringent building cleaning, and recommendations for personal hygiene.

  • Social distancing – Maintaining a safe social distance of at least six-feet apart from one another is a key aspect of this plan. To facilitate this, we will limit capacities in our buildings and classrooms at any given time so that social distancing can always be maintained.
  • Face coverings– Face coverings will be required in all public locations including classrooms, shops, labs, hallways or outside locations where people may congregate. Students and employees will be expected to bring their own face coverings, however the college will have a supply of disposable masks on hand if needed.
  • Building Cleaning– Classrooms and buildings will be cleaned and disinfected at regular intervals throughout the day. Recognizing that staying healthy in a pandemic is a shared responsibility, faculty and students may be asked to wipe down their desks and work stations before and after use. Buildings will be sanitized at night.
  • Personal Hygiene– In addition to wearing face coverings, everyone on campus is asked to wash their hands frequently or use hand sanitizer. Everyone should avoid close contact with one another – no handshakes or hugs. Anyone who feels sick should stay home and seek medical care.

Student Services

Bladen Community College has established an Advising Center for students, which is the best and safest way for students and prospective students to receive services such as admissions, financial aid, registration and records, advising, veterans services, career and employment resources, and wellness counseling.

Beginning August 1, the college offers limited on-campus assistance for those who are not able to access virtual services. This assistance will include admissions, advising, financial aid, and registration and records, and will be available on campus.

All visitors will be asked to wear a mask and follow precautions such as social distancing.

Students are encouraged to pay their bill online, but for those who prefer to pay in person, the Cashier’s Offices in Administration on campus will also be open.  These offices will operate Monday through Friday from 10:00am -2:00pm.  Face coverings and social distancing will be required. Online bill payment is easy and convenient on our website and mail in payments are also accepted. Please refer to our websites for deadlines.

Limited on-campus assistance will be available.  Additional departments, including the Learning Enhancement Center and those services will continue for fall.

Activities and Events

Bladen Community College will not be having special events or activities on our campuses until further notice. Meetings, trainings and/or assemblies will be conducted in virtual platforms.

Academic Resources

In an effort to provide support for all Bladen Community College students with the academic services and resources needed to support their learning and success, the college will continue offering limited in-person and remote access to advising and tutoring support through its Advising Center and Learning Enhancement Center, reference and research support through its Student Resource Center and online learning and online teaching support through its Distance Learning department. While most academic support needs can be met through web meeting, email, or phone, limited in-person assistance by appointment is available to help with specific special cases. Call or email the department you need.  All students who access academic services in person must follow Bladen Community College COVID–19 protocols including mandatory face coverings and social distancing, and should not come to campus when feeling sick.

Employees

Staff whose jobs permit will continue to work remotely for much of their work schedule, with staggered work hours when on campus to allow for social distancing in offices. Faculty may conduct office hours virtually and all campus-wide college meetings will be held in a virtual environment. While working on campus, employees will be required to wear face coverings in common areas such as hallways and break rooms. Employees who are at high risk and are scheduled to work on campus should contact Human Resources at 910.879.5513 or tmundy@bladencc.edu. Employees who have concerns about working on campus should contact the HR Director.  Those who feel sick should stay home, contact their supervisor and seek medical care. Employees who have had direct or indirect contact with COVID-19 should contact their supervisors and the President’s office.

Update / June 13, 2020

Dear BCC Family,

We received confirmation this morning that one of our students has tested positive for COVID-19.  The student was attending skills training on campus.  The class was practicing social distancing and taking other recommended precautions.  We have already spoken with the other students in the class and the instructor.  Today we will be cleaning and fogging the areas on campus used by this class.  We will continue to work with Dr. Terri Duncan, the Bladen County Health Director, to follow her recommendations as to other proactive steps we can take to ensure your safety.

Please join me in keeping this student in our thoughts as we pray for a speedy recovery.

We will continue to practice the three W’s (waiting (social distancing), washing hands, wearing masks).  We will continue to have staff work an alternate schedule to reduce exposure, limit the number of students in our skills training (hands on classes) to allow social distancing, maintain the majority of our classes online and remote, and continue to clean and wipe down our work areas.  We are also working hard to install sneeze guards and other personal protective equipment where necessary to ensure safe interactions for in person meetings.

Update / April 17, 2020

April 17, 2020 / 1:30 p.m.

Dear Bladen Community College Family,

My message today is one of continued gratitude. Thank you, to our faculty and staff working diligently to adapt to remote, online classes, sustaining our vital educational mission through the implementation of a virtual campus. Thank you, to staff members who are working from home and on campus performing those essential tasks necessary to keep the college operational and safe.  Thank you, to our students who are embracing a new learning experience and adjusting expectations along with the rest of us as we continue our work during this uncertainty. Thank you, to our community which has supported us as we have worked through the rapid changes to our services and limited access to our campus.  Thank you to our Board of Trustees who are also adapting to communicating and meeting differently as they work to provide guidance and support to our employees and students.  I am grateful to all of you for your flexibility in these unprecedented times.

We are steadfast and diligent in our efforts to practice preventive measures for the protection of our students and employees.  With that in mind, we are asking for your patience as we continue to use an appointment process for essential visits to the campus.  Essential visits may include accessing a computer or visiting our food pantry, you can email BCClibrary@Bladencc.edu to set up an appointment.  Hopefully, you have been able to access the hotspots that have been made available to you on campus and throughout the county for your internet access (thank you again Star Communications!).  We must continue to work together to follow the advice of the public health community and, as much as we can, we need to stay at home.

It appears unlikely that we are going to be able to resume face to face classes on campus this spring semester.  However, as soon as we can, we will facilitate students coming on campus with their instructors to work on classes and skills requiring hands on instruction and practice. The inability to be on campus has impacted so many things including final exams, graduation, summer school, and fall registration.

Final Exams 
Final exams will be addressed by our instructors and decided on a class by class basis. Discussions are being held about options and resources to continue to support our students as we approach the end of the semester. Students should direct questions to their instructors for specific details.

Graduation for Class of 2020
I regret that we are having to assess whether or not we will have an opportunity for our graduates to walk across the stage and hear their name called in front of classmates, family, friends, and faculty. We are actively exploring creative alternatives to celebrate our graduate’s accomplishments.  These will be shared at a later date as these decisions are finalized.  While we will not gather for graduation in May, students who satisfy all requirements to graduate will have their degrees, diplomas, and/or certificates posted on their official transcripts after the conclusion of the spring semester.

Future BCC Classes
Early Registration and Advising for current students for the summer session and Fall 2020 began this week and will continue until April 30th  Due to the ongoing uncertainty regarding our ability to be on campus, we are offering summer term classes remotely and online. New students for both summer and fall semesters are encouraged to apply now.  We would welcome the opportunity to serve students home from other colleges and universities or others using this time to pursue new skills for their careers to join us this summer. Advisors are available for assistance and support in applying and registering for classes. We will continue to monitor this event; but acting optimistically, we are moving forward with fall semester classes to be offered in a variety of ways including in classrooms on campus.

Update / March 30, 2020

March 30, 2020 / 4:00 p.m.

Dear BCC Family,

As you have heard, beginning this evening at 5:00 pm, Governor Cooper is asking us to stay at home in order to protect ourselves and others from COVID-19.  Also, Bladen Community College has been asked to keep our students engaged in their classes and progressing towards their educational goals.  In order to meet both challenges, our campus will be operating virtually until further notice.  Our faculty have been teleworking for a week already.  This week our staff made the transition to work from home.  We are all still available by phone (leave a voicemail and we will receive it) and by email (the best way to reach us right now).  We understand this will be an inconvenience at times, but, we must do our part in stopping the spread of this terrible virus.

Since this began, we have been working diligently to respond to the challenges and hurdles as we become aware of them.

  • Computers can still be accessed by appointment by contacting the BCC library at and/or internet by emailing bcclibrary@bladencc.edu  or call directly 910.879.5646 and leave a message requesting an appointment.

We are encouraging our students and employees to remain flexible, as this is a fluid and rapidly evolving situation. College leadership has put into place contingency plans and is preparing to sustain critical college functions, including instruction, information technology, essential business office activities, safety, security, and maintenance during this time of response to COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus.

To limit the number of people on Bladen Community College’s campus and lessen the potential spread of COVID-19, BCC is implementing preventive measures.

Online Classes and Support

Beginning Monday, March 23, 2020, Bladen Community College will transition to online instruction for all classes. There will be no in person classes. By March 20th, instructors will be communicating with students in their classes. All students should check their Moodle and BCC email for additional information regarding their course(s).

Classes Requiring Hands On Instruction and Labs

Students should reach out to instructors for further information and guidance.

As you transition to online classes, please access the following to help you get started and to support you throughout the spring semester:

Campus Access by Appointment ONLY

Bladen Community College will remain open, however minimizing the amount of people on our campus will help mitigate the spread of the virus. Also, as we have stated in previous communications to our BCC community, if you are sick, please stay home. If you have traveled and suspect that you may have been exposed, please stay home. Please do not visit our campus. We are committed to staying connected to our students, college personnel, and community so we encourage you to phone and email us so that we can assist you with any questions, provide technical support or guide you to resources. Please be flexible and patient as we are operating with limited staff.

Bladen Community College operational hours have changed and the campus will be on an alternate schedule of 9am until 5pm Monday thru Thursday and 9am until 3pm on Fridays. Campus access is limited and by appointment only. Use the BCC directory for contact information. All approved visitors on campus MUST sign-in in the Student Resource Center (BLDG #7). Students are asked to bring their student ID card if a visit to campus by appointment is necessary.

Second Eight (8) Week Classes

Second eight (8) week classes will begin on Monday, March 23rd utilizing online instruction. You should have received a reminder via email in your BCC email account if you are registered for second eight (8) week classes.

Bookstore Operations

In efforts to prevent the spread of illness, the BCC Bookstore will be closed to customers until at least April 1, 2020. The BCC Bookstore is currently accepting orders online at https://bookstore.bladencc.edu/, by email at bccbookstore@bladencc.edu, and by phone at 910.879.5669. During this time phone availability may be limited; we strongly encourage communication through email when possible. Shipping fees will be waived through March 31, 2020. If for any reason you do not want to receive your textbooks via free shipping, please make contact by email or by phone to place your order and set alternative pick up arrangements. Also, if you wish to pay with cash/check, please contact the bookstore through the methods mentioned above and we will make arrangements to accommodate you. The bookstore will only accept orders for spring second eight (8) week classes during this time.

Special Events and Campus Activities

All campus special events or activities have been cancelled or postponed. A decision will be made about the upcoming graduation ceremonies by Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Bladen Community College is following the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for cleaning and disinfecting.

Emergency Alerts

We will provide regular updates on our webpage and will use our Regroup Emergency Notification as needed. If you have not already signed up for emergency alerts, please visit our alert system page to login using your BCC username and password. Dear BCC family,

Effective Monday, March 23rd, all classes will transition to online instruction. There will be no in person classes as of Monday. Dear BCC family,

In response to the Governor’s announcement today, Bladen Community College is extending its spring break until Monday, March 23, 2020.

Staff should report to campus unless you are sick, suspect that you have been exposed, or in a high risk population. If so, please stay home and contact your supervisor. Students and employees should monitor email, text messages, and the Bladen Community College website for updates and any changes to this plan.

Due to the seriousness of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) global pandemic, the college’s administration is monitoring the situation and is reviewing further measures as developments warrant. At this time, no cases of coronavirus have been identified in Bladen County. Please continue to access this webpage for preventive measures and resources to aid you and your family during this unprecedented event.

Official Statement on Preventive Measures

Dear BCC family,

Bladen Community College is committed to being proactive in efforts to help prevent the spread of illness. The BCC leadership continues to monitor the coronavirus pandemic status and is meeting frequently to determine the best course of action.  We are relying on the expertise and updates from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, the Bladen County Health Department, and the N.C. Community College System.

Our students, faculty and staff are expected to return from spring break to campus on Monday, March 16th.  Bladen Community College will operate on a regular schedule including our on campus (face to face) classes. Additionally, we are taking the following preventative measures effective immediately:

  • All campus special events are cancelled or postponed until further notice
  • All nonessential travel for employees is suspended. Exceptions will be reviewed by the President on a case-by-case basis. It is strongly advised that virtual options be utilized when available.

We acknowledge that guidance from federal and state officials regarding the coronavirus is fluid and rapidly changing. Due to this evolving situation, we will be posting timely and official updates about coronavirus and changes on campus operations on our website.  We encourage you to visit www.bladencc.edu and social media to stay connected with Bladen Community College.

Bladen Community College is committed to ensuring that our students receive the education for which they have enrolled and that they make continued progress toward graduation. While there have been no cases reported in Bladen County at this time, the health and safety of our campus is our highest priority. Faculty, please begin to prepare your coursework to migrate to an online format should the need arise.

Social distancing is the most effective means of slowing the spread of this virus.  If you are sick, suspect that you have been exposed, or in a high risk population, please stay home.  Students, faculty, staff, and the community should follow good respiratory etiquette and personal hygiene (wash your hands) to prevent the spread of any illnesses.

What Can I Do?


Hands should be washed for at least 20 seconds. Lather hands and create friction to remove germs.
Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water is not readily available.
Lysol products kill COVID-19.

 

When Should I Seek Medical Attention?

Call your doctor if you develop symptoms, have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19, or have recently traveled from an area with widespread occurrences of COVID-19 . Please CALL your health care provider before going in to avoid potentially exposing others.
