The mission of the College Readiness program is to provide educational opportunities for adults 16 years or older who are out of school. The program addresses the needs of adults who do not have a high school diploma or who lack sufficient mastery of basic education skills to enable them to function effectively in society. Students can improve their reading, writing, mathematics, and communication skills through five major programs: Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency, Adult High School (AHS), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Compensatory Education (CED). Classes are at no charge and are offered in a variety of settings and times. Class dates and times are announced as locations for the programs are determined.
Adult High School (AHS)
This program will prepare the student for higher education and the workforce by helping them complete their high school diploma. Students will complete required course work for a high school diploma such as English, NC History, Algebra, Biology, etc.
High School Equivalency (HSE)
Students that require more than 15 high school credits to graduate use this pathway to earn a diploma that is equivalent to a high school diploma. Students will take the GED or HiSET assessments to determine if they have the same knowledge and skills of a high school graduate. The fee to take the GED is $80 and $50 to take the HiSET.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
This program is designed to help individuals with a limited knowledge of English to learn the necessary skills to be competent in speaking and writing the English language.
Transitions (Adult Basic Education)
Classes are designed to strengthen student’s skills and performance in English, reading, math and employment related skills.
Basic Skills Plus
Students interested in simultaneously obtaining a high school credential and career related certificate (Pharmacy Technician, Nursing Assistant, Welding, Early Childhood) may be eligible for the Basic Skills Plus program. This program is a wonderful opportunity to be enrolled in a certificate program with the tuition fee waived.
